Soft Landing brings together new works by New York-based artist Sheree Hovsepian, whose practice engages photography, sculpture, and installation in an exploration of movement, abstraction, and various conceptions of the “object.” Among these is an ongoing series of photograms called Haptic Wonders. The term “haptic” refers to the sense of touch, pointing to Hovsepian’s production of these works in the darkroom, moving and manipulating various materials. They record a performance of her body in a prescribed amount of time and space, further exploring the physicality of photography. These images are paired with multimedia, wall-based installations called Material Gestures, and free-standing sculptures made of bronze and wood that mimic the shapes and forms of her photographic works. Hovsepian produced many of the works for this exhibition during a residency at Gallery 44 in March 2014.
