Carbon Manifest investigates perpetual metamorphoses and inevitable changes of the planet through giant carbon-printed photographs created in the Arctic. The environment is often believed to be a constant despite the gradual, infinitesimal changes that are evidence to the contrary. J R Bernstein photographs these evidences of the passage of time, which parallel an uncomfortable, existential reflection of the constant-changing self, while alluding to serious environmental challenges. Through this contradictory juxtaposition—unseen changes to the natural environment wrought by carbon pollution, shown through an effectively permanent printing method that uses the very element that is to blame for global climate change—the work tells a story of change while raising awareness of this most pressing issue.
