The artist states: “My grandparents loved me so much during my early childhood, but I moved to Canada before I was old enough to really understand them as people. In a way, a part of me is constantly grieving the memories I could have had with them had we not immigrated. That’s why I try to reconstruct their life experiences through images.”

Nguyen’s grandfather lived in the Northwestern region of Vietnam in the 50s and 60s. He trekked through mountainous terrain to work as a teacher, and on his journeys back to Hanoi.
