Ise Shrine Photo Exhibition

Haruo Nakano

Nakano is the official photographer of the Ise Jingu, the largest and most revered Shinto shrine in Japan. A huge complex of over 100 buildings spreads across a vast forest, it is dedicated to Shinto’s most important deity, Amaterasu (Sun Goddess). Nakano documented the reconstruction ceremony, where buildings are dismantled and rebuilt afresh every 20 years. This renewal has been ongoing for more than 1,300 years, resulting in a shrine both ancient and new.
